Background of the Study

Midwives play a crucial role in reducing maternal mortality by providing skilled care during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period (Ibrahim et al., 2024). In Nigeria, midwives are central to maternal health services, especially in rural areas where they often serve as the primary point of contact for pregnant women (Adamu et al., 2023). The high maternal mortality rate in Nigeria remains a public health concern, and Kaduna State is no exception, with maternal mortality rates significantly exceeding global averages (Abdullahi et al., 2023).

Inadequate midwifery training, lack of resources, and poor working conditions may limit midwives' effectiveness in reducing maternal mortality (Olawoyin et al., 2023). Despite the critical role that midwives play, there is insufficient research on how their specific practices impact maternal health outcomes in Kaduna State. This study will assess the role of midwives in maternal mortality reduction, focusing on their training, the quality of care they provide, and the challenges they face in delivering services.

Statement of the Problem

Maternal mortality rates remain high in Kaduna State, despite the presence of midwifery services in healthcare facilities. The contribution of midwives in reducing maternal mortality has not been sufficiently explored in the region, and there is a need to better understand how midwives' roles in antenatal, labor, and postnatal care can be enhanced to save lives (Suleiman & Bakare, 2023). The effectiveness of midwives in reducing maternal mortality may be influenced by factors such as their level of training, the resources available to them, and their working conditions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of midwives in maternal mortality reduction in Kaduna State healthcare facilities.
  2. To evaluate the challenges faced by midwives in providing maternal care in Kaduna State.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving midwives' contributions to maternal health outcomes in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the role of midwives in reducing maternal mortality in Kaduna State healthcare facilities?
  2. What challenges do midwives face in providing effective maternal care in Kaduna State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the effectiveness of midwives in reducing maternal mortality in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Midwives’ quality of care is significantly associated with reduced maternal mortality in Kaduna State healthcare facilities.
  2. Midwives face significant challenges that hinder their ability to reduce maternal mortality in Kaduna State.
  3. Improved training and resources for midwives will result in a significant reduction in maternal mortality in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on midwives working in healthcare facilities in Kaduna State. Limitations include potential bias in reporting the challenges faced by midwives and the generalizability of findings to other regions with different healthcare systems.

Definitions of Terms

  • Midwife: A trained professional who provides care to women during pregnancy, labor, and the postnatal period.
  • Maternal Mortality: The death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days of delivery due to complications arising from pregnancy or its management.
